An evaluation of the Summer Career Exploration Program (SCEP), conducted by Public/Private Ventures (PP/V) and commissioned by the William Penn Foundation has recently been released. The evaluation methodology included a random assignment impact study, designed to understand the short and long term effects of program participation on youth. Researchers found that implementation was strong, but there was little difference in the long term effects of the program on SCEP students than those in the comparison group. Nevertheless, the report concludes that SCEP and similar programs have an important place in our region's system of supports, programs and opportunities for young people.
While the study is just now being published, its findings have already been incorporated into the program, operated by the Philadelphia Youth Network. The program improvements include a year-round component, expanded job development and employer training, and increased opportunities for career exposure and learning.
