Funding Priority: Youth Development

Young people require community and connection. Complex factors interact to promote a successful transition to adult life, including family, income, neighborhood, community, education, and opportunity beyond school hours. The Foundation values the role communities play in developing the social and personal assets of youth.

Our main youth development objectives are to:

  • Build Systems to Support Beyond-School-Hours Opportunities. Advocate for a more coordinated approach to the public policies affecting beyond-school-hours programs in Greater Philadelphia, including Camden.
  • Neighborhood Youth Development Initiative. Strengthen the service delivery infrastructure in certain neighborhoods where we employ a neighborhood-based youth development strategy. To date, our targeted neighborhoods have included Haddington (West Philadelphia), Eastern North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, and the city of Chester.

With all of our funding in this area, we emphasize the importance of strong quality standards for youth development programming. We believe that high quality programs address a combination of six key components.
