Diverse coalition secures $23 million to create a world-class network of trails
Publication Date: February 18, 2010
Greater Philadelphia received extraordinarily good news this week when the Federal government awarded $23 million in stimulus funding to local agencies that will help to establish a bi-state regional trail network. The funding will support construction of key connections between existing trails and extend others into largely under-served areas. While the federal dollars will be spent in the region's urban core, they dramatically enhance Greater Philadelphia's trail assets, providing significant economic benefits to surrounding communities and the region as a whole. Once complete, a well-connected regional trail system will enhance mobility within the region, helping to connect residents to economic opportunities, including jobs, shopping, and local tourism. In addition to the economic benefits, active trails promote healthy lifestyles, soften the environmental impacts of auto transportation, and provide greater access to high-quality recreational opportunities. The funding application was in itself a major accomplishment for our region. An unprecedented coalition of community organizations, environmental advocates, and regional policymakers came together to agree on a unified, bi-state application that prioritized key areas for investment. There are strong indications that this coordinated, regional approach had much to do with the success of the funding application. Click here for PlanPhilly's coverage of the announcement. See the link below for an article from the Foundation's 2008 Annual Report that explored this topic in depth, including maps and photos of many of the proposed trail improvements.
