Conceived and produced by a task force representing state agencies and nonprofit partner agencies, Renovate or Replace provides a convincing array of arguments for restoration and reuse of older neighborhood-based schools. The report suggests that development of the large, consolidated school facilities now in vogue creates higher costs for building construction and student busing, greater traffic congestion from auto and bus delivery of children to school, and leads to neighborhood decline.
Restoring older schools in established neighborhoods is a more cost-effective alternative, allows students the opportunity to walk or bike to school (helping curb childhood obesity), and aids in the creation of a visible, active, and involved neighborhood, keeping older communities vibrant.
Renovate or Replace, funded in part by a grant from the William Penn Foundation, was designed and published by Save Our Land, Save Our Towns Enterprises, Inc., dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of Pennsylvania’s traditional cities, towns, and countryside.
