News line Philadelphia's Changing Immigrant Population – Opportunities and Policy Challenges
Publication Date: November 13, 2008

Today the Brookings Institution released Recent Immigration to Philadelphia: Regional Change in a Re-Emerging Gateway, a report examining trends in local immigration patterns and related policy questions.

Brookings’ findings indicate that Greater Philadelphia is once again becoming a key hub for immigration, and now has the largest and fastest-growing immigrant population of its peers. Immigrants account for nearly 75 percent of the growth in Greater Philadelphia’s labor force since 2000.

The report recommends that Greater Philadelphia needs to emphasize building English skills and language access for its immigrant populations, and should make region-wide integration of immigrants a major policy objective.

The report was produced by Brookings in partnership with the Philadelphia Foundation, with funding from the Wachovia, Independence, and William Penn Foundations.

The full report is available here from the Brookings Institution. Additional information is available here from the Philadelphia Foundation.
